Development

Boehringer Ingelheim has two main development centres in Biberach, Germany, as well as one in Ridgefield, USA, and one in Kobe, Japan. Our overriding goal is quick, efficient, cost-effective development using high-quality substances. We rely on our own research, in-licensing and indication extensions to facilitate quick registrations at authorities, successful market introductions and cost-effective, resource-efficient production. Medications are then the result of our own research conducted in Biberach on the central nervous system, respiratory tract, metabolism and thromboembolism or in Vienna on oncology. Of course, Boehringer Ingelheim has licensing projects, too. A particular focus of our work is on lifecycle management – the innovative further development of core products.

Medicine & Regulatory affairs

Our Medicine & Regulatory Affairs Division is home to natural scientists of all disciplines: physicians, mathematicians, statistical programmers and medical documentation experts. People working in the Medicine Division investigate new drugs before their market launch, especially their impact on healthy humans and whether they have the desired effect on patients, ensuring quality, safety and authorization. Meanwhile, our Regulatory Affairs people make sure that our products meet the legal requirements in local markets.

Key tasks include:
  • Designing and conducting studies
  • Quality assurance
  • Evaluation and statistical processing of results
  • Completing market authorization processes with relevant public bodies

Epidemiology

The Epidemiology division studies the effects of our medicines. They aim to understand who our patients are and how they react when using our products. This division uses a much larger data source than clinical research; their information comes from real populations, not strictly controlled clinical laboratories. Safety is their main concern; they aim to provide the safest and most effective pharmaceutical products today and in the future.

Key tasks include:
  • Initiating and developing the design of pharmacoepidemiological studies
  • Developing study protocols
  • Statistical analysis of secondary data
