Proud of Our Diversity & Inclusive leadership
At Boehringer Ingelheim we recognize that our competitive advantage is due in part to a commitment to inclusion and diversity initiatives. An example of this is our Business Resource Groups (BRGs), where employees share experiences and diverse ideas regarding recruitment and retention, culture, disability, generations, sexual orientation and work-life integration within our communities. These groups cultivate better decision-making and innovation, which strengthen our company as well as the towns and cities in which we live. A guest feature by Brittany Schneider, Talent Acquisition & Management Specialist at our Ridgefield site in the United States.
We recognize and support the business resource groups for the purpose of providing a positive forum for professional development and to help drive the company’s mission and core values around inclusion, diversity and engagement in support of making more health for our customers and patients. BRGs contribute significantly to the business particularly in the areas of recruiting, retention and promotion of diverse talent. They also serve to raise awareness among employees of the richness of our diverse backgrounds and experiences.
What is the Business Resource Group Leadership Development Lab (BRG LDL)
Betsy Silva, Boehringer Ingelheim’s lead for Business Resource Groups, proposed the development and implementation of the program. She worked closely with Michael Murphy, Boehringer Ingelheim’s Leadership and Learning lead, to design and pilot the program. In 2015, we pioneered the program branding it the Business Resource Group Leadership Development Lab (BRG LDL). The BRG LDL provides BRG leaders with a customized professional learning track that fosters and develops those specific skills and attributes that result in successful leadership of both Business Resource Groups and more formal leadership roles in the organization.
The goals of the program are:
- To contribute to Boehringer Ingelheim’s culture of leadership
- To promote and align those behaviors that are important for Boehringer Ingelheim, namely Accountability, Agility, and Intrapreneurship (AAI)
- Further strengthen and enable professional development
- Support our company’s focus on personal development by meeting the custom needs of emerging leaders.
The skills and capabilities that are developed through this program not only enrich the talent pool for the BRG leadership pipeline but also provide participants with transferrable skills to build leadership capabilities within their roles.
As they reflected on the progress of the program and the participants’ experiences, Silva said, “I am inspired by the participants’ reflections and engagement. It’s a remarkable experience to see how this Lab impacts their leadership development.” Murphy added, “The BRG LDL complements our overall leadership development model by providing aspiring leaders with a customized offering that enhances our leader pipeline, provides growth in critical leader competencies, and fosters increased engagement.”
Here’s what past participants had to say about their participation
“Overall, I believe my involvement within Leadership Development Lab was a success to my career at Boehringer Ingelheim and to me personally. I have developed and uncovered certain leadership traits, I have become inspired and challenged to take on new roles, I have increased my networking base, and I have successfully applied some of these skills to my everyday role at Boehringer Ingelheim and to my role within CABS and the Diversity Council. When I ask myself, “Am I growing?” and “Am I connected?” I can firmly answer yes to both questions!” – Suzanne Trainor, RN CABS Co-Chair
“Moving forward, I will use what I learned from the BRG Leadership Development Lab to improve my leadership skills – to become a transformational leader, develop strategies aligned with the evolving environment when working locally and for BRG/ABRG, motivate people to achieve the goals using a customized approach, get involved in more projects (e.g. Patient Champion) and capture every opportunity to connect with people.” – Tina Law, Pulmonary Representative in Los Angeles and Incoming 2016 ABRG Chair
“Through this program, I have had exposure to many different departments and leaders within the organization.” – Moe Remitz, Cardio Representative in CT and Incoming 2016 NxGen Co-Chair
“Vision without execution is just hallucination” – Henry Ford.
“BRG LDL program helped me to break down my Leadership development goal into a sequence of known concepts and best practices starting with self-awareness and eventually evolve as a leader to take the learnings into my area of work to inspire greatness in others thereby making my Leadership vision a reality.” – Dr. Sar Jayaraman, IT Project Manager and Incoming 2017 ABRG Chair.
We are proud to have a culture, business leaders and employees that are passionate about enhancing our inclusion, diversity and engagement practices and are thrilled to see our BRG members continue to grow with us through this and other important developmental programs we provide.
